Lady Pirates & Prichard Down Corydon 50-37 in Opener
The Charlestown Lady Pirate Basketball team not only got their 2013-14 campaign off on the right track; but also earned their new head coach his first varsity victory. Preceding the win, CHS Athletic Director Chad Gilbert presented Lady Pirate Head Coach Michael Prichard the game ball as shown in the photo to the right. Corydon (1-1 & 0-1 MSC) entered the Friday night contest riding a three game winning streak versus the Lady Pirates, and kept it close throughout the first half, trailing 16-15 at the intermission. The first half plagued both teams with ragged and sloppy play, highlighted by a dose of excessive fouls. The second half was a different story, especially for the home standing Lady Pirates; who started the third on a 11-2 run led by Junior Kaitlyn Henning. Henning, who was held to just five in the first half; finished with a game high of 18 points and was named the player of the game by CPPSB. The Lady Pirates' second half surge was paved primarily by dominating the glass and taking advantage of free throw opportunities; outrebounding the visitors 45 to 24. Senior Jessica Farmer and Junior Justice Burdin both contributed eight points each for the winning cause. Charlestown (1-0 & 1-0 MSC) committed 17 turnovers, but were successful with 19 out of the 24 free throws shot. The Lady Pirates' next game is Tuesday evening at arch-rival New Washington, for a 6 pm JV tip and Varsity to follow.
